Cristina Álvarez Peregrina is a researcher and lecturer in Optometry and Vision Science at the Complutense University of Madrid, where she has been part of the Faculty of Optics and Optometry since 2022. She previously spent twelve years as a professor and researcher at the European University of Madrid and also worked as a marketing manager in a multinational company in the optical sector.
She has led the Vision Research Group, a consolidated team focused on four main areas: myopia, ocular surface and contact lenses, clinical and public health optometry, and visual quality and refractive surgery. Cristina has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, including 34 articles on myopia, which have collectively received over 360 citations. Her overall scientific output has accumulated more than 700 citations, with an h-index of 15, and nearly half of her publications involve international collaboration. A significant proportion of her work ranks among the top 25% most cited documents worldwide.
She regularly presents her research at major international conferences, including IMC and ARVO, and currently supervises several doctoral theses, five of which have already been defended. She has completed an active research period (Sexenio 2015–2020) and participates in multiple clinical and epidemiological research projects. She is the principal investigator of a multicenter randomized controlled trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of ZEISS myopia control lenses in European children (2022–2026).
Cristina is a member of the European Myopia Network and is currently the only European member of the Global Myopia Advisory Board of Zeiss.
